Hi, we're Modern Vintage. We love weddings, we love love & we love to sing while we set up. Our favorite part of the day is watching you, as a new couple, walk back down the aisle after the ceremony. That feeling of elation & pure joy is why we do what we do.

DIYF: Freaky Friday, Mason Jar Mummies

Oct 5

October is here! Yes it it is the month for changing leaves and amazing fall festivals and weddings but it is also Halloween time!  I LOVE  Halloween. I love dressing up and decorating and all the free candy.  Not going to lie, the candy is probably my favorite part.  I saw a cute idea for mummies on Pinterest made from Mason Jars that I really wanted to re-create.  They are fun and cute enough for the kids but not too cheesy.

My starting tools were:

  • 4 different size mason jars
  • sheer fabric (like chiffon)
  • googly eyes (yep, that is the technical term)
  • glue gun
  • votive or tea light candles

I already had the small mason jars and was able to get some huge ones that I really ended up liking.  My original intent was to use gauze to wrap them with but when I went to buy it and saw how expensive it was I decided on a sheer fabric.

Start by cutting the fabric into long, thin strips.  It is easier if you cut it long enough to wrap around the entire jar.  The next step is to glue a piece of the fabric to what you want to be the back of the mason jars starting at the top, then wrap the fabric around the jar until you can’t see any of the clear glass then glue it again at the bottom.  I glued a little in the middle on the ones where my fabric strips weren’t long enough.   After you finish mummifying all the jars hot glue the googly eyes onto each one.  I should say that there was one casualty, I knocked one of the eyes I had already put hot glue on off the couch and it landed on the back of my leg.  This didn’t really hurt, it was the ripping it from the skin part that left a mark.

After you finish wrapping just plop a candle down in the bottom and you have a delightfully ghoulish mummy.  Just a hint: put a tiny bit of water in the bottom if you are using a votive candle so the was is easier to get out once the candle has burned out.  My house will be decked out for Halloween this weekend!   So make the most of your fall weekend, make some smores, have a bonfire or just sit out in yard and enjoy the crisp air!
