welcome

Hi, we're Modern Vintage. We love weddings, we love love & we love to sing while we set up. Our favorite part of the day is watching you, as a new couple, walk back down the aisle after the ceremony. That feeling of elation & pure joy is why we do what we do.

Planning a Non-Pinterest Pinterest Wedding: Planning + Prosecco

Sep 8

Been dreaming of that perfect, Pinterest wedding for as long as you can remember? We weren’t kidding when we said on our Planning + Prosecco video that Pinterest can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s a great source of inspiration but can also be the cause of distraction (countless hours when we should be working, eating sleeping or doing just about anything else, amiright?), confusion and sometimes heartache. How can one thing be so many things?! Let’s break down our tips for the best way to use Pinterest and when to shut it down.

How Can Pinterest Help Me Plan My Wedding Day?

Pinterest can be a source of amazing inspiration. But, you need to have an idea of what you’re looking for first. We use Pinterest a lot when sketching out a wedding design with our clients, but before getting started we sit down without photos and just talk about their vision for their day. What do you want it to feel like when people walk into a room? An intimate dinner gathering? A roaring dance party? An elegant soiree or a backyard BBQ? How can you incorporate your personal styles and personalities – think about what you like to do for fun, what kind of music you like to listen to, how your home is decorated. What are some things you’ve loved at weddings you’ve attended? What did you hate? Once you’ve thought through some of these things, then let’s turn to Pinterest and start exploring.

What Should I Pin?

Pin things that you are drawn to. Color palettes, beautiful ceremonies, flowers, photographs. It doesn’t have to only be photos from other weddings! In fact, we recommend that you just include anything you are drawn to – a beautiful photo of a family gathered at a table, a picture of a luscious velvet chair, a marble floor. Then step back and start to look through your photos and try to pick out the similarities. We often have clients tell us their Pinterest boards are all over the place, that nothing matches. But if you really look, similar items will start to jump out of the page. We’ll see certain textures start to emerge, like floral styles, colors or palettes that work well together. We’ll also get a sense for the details – there are a ton of dancing photos signifying an epic dance party, or beautiful signage, or silly favors. All of these things help shape the day you are building together.

Why Should I Use Pinterest With Caution?

Here’s the tricky part. All of these photos and sources of inspiration should be just that: inspiration. This is important for a few reasons:

Budget

The dreaded B word. If you are planning your wedding, it’s possible you haven’t done this before so it’s hard to know what things cost. Take a long, hard look at your budget. Then take a long, hard look at your Pinterest page. Do you think these things match up? If your answer is yes, then hooray! This step is easier for you. But, if you’re not sure, start doing some research. Share the photos with your vendors to get an idea on cost. If you are planning with a planner/designer, this is where they can provide a lot of guidance. Part of our job throughout this process is not only to help you design your perfect wedding, but to also maintain realistic expectations. You may not have done this before, but we have! We can usually take a look at one of those beautiful Pinterest photos and tell you if it’s wildly out of budget or something attainable. And then (here’s the best part) give suggestions on ways you might achieve a similar look and feel that is more palatable to your purse strings.

It Might Not Be Real

Did you know that a pretty sizable percentage of the wedding photos you see on Pinterest were photo shoots? No, really. Event designers and vendors (us included) love to play around with new ideas and inspiration and photograph them. They can act as lovely sources for inspiration, but sometimes aren’t very practical unless you have an astronomical budget. It’s easy to use $50 chairs, luxurious linens and have the table positively dripping with flowers when you only have to pay for one. Follow links to their original posting to see if the wedding you are lusting after actually happened. Which leads me right into my next point…

That Wedding Has Already Happened

If it was an actual wedding, keep in mind that it’s been done. Don’t just send your florist or event designer a photo and say you want this exactly. Instead, we recommend putting your own spin on it. Your designer and/or florist can help you to change things up a bit and truly make it your own. It’s super important to establish a level of trust with your florist and designer/planner and to place the emphasis more on the desired look and feel and less on the exact number of peonies or angle of every table. Ideally there are no actual photos of what your wedding will look like. Yours hasn’t happened yet. But when it does, it’s going to be glorious.

So What Do I Do Now?

Use Pinterest as a wonderful tool to help you wade through all of the possibilities and narrow down the direction of your wedding design. Seriously! We’re not knocking it – weddings are such truly visual events and it’s great to have a place you can go and find tons of inspiration and even source the products to help put that design into action. But also keep in mind that that being “Pinterest Worthy” is not what’s truly important on wedding day. You are getting married! You are going to have an amazing day surrounded by your friends and family and they are there to spend it with the two of you, not your stuff. So make it about you two. Incorporate things that are meaningful to you both – the rest is just details.
