What is Wedding Design?

Wedding Design may be a word you hear when you start planning your wedding. But what exactly is wedding design? Design goes farther than just deciding what your wedding is going to look like but it is planning the experience or feeling of your wedding. It is deciding the vibe you want from your wedding and how you want your guests to feel once they arrive.

So, How do I do This? Creative Session!

When we are planning or designing a wedding we always start with a creative session. This is a meeting where we sit down with you and talk about your wedding in its entirety. We talk about the overall look and feel and really start to understand your vision so we can tell your story to the guests through food, beverages, music and aesthetics.  Don’t stop with just wedding, think about how you decorate your house, what kind of music you enjoy–all these things will help you incorporate you into the wedding day.

When working to get creative we talk about budget but it is also important to think about your “top 3”. Yes, these again. Those are the 3 most important parts of the wedding to you. It is important to know those things because that is where you will want to distribute the most money and put the most thought.

Then we jump onto your Pinterest board. Yeah, this is where it gets really fun!

Oh Lort, my Pinterest Board is a Mess…

You may think that your board is all over the place but seriously, it is a lot more pulled together than you think. We can typically look for similarities within your board. We look for similar colors and pins on your board then we narrow it down to try to stay consistent with the design.  We usually find ourselves pinning or gravitating toward the same pins or style and odds are, you are doing this too.

In the beginning your range may be broad as you are trying to figure out what style you like. Look at all different styles like organic and loose florals, tight, pulled together flowers, lots of candles to see what you prefer. Look at different color palettes and then start narrowing it down based on the ones you gravitate toward. If you keep pinning that bouquet with yellows, oranges and green then use those as your palette!  Once we have a cohesive design we share it with all the vendors so they know the look and feel we are going for.

It Isn’t All About Looks

Yes, the way your wedding looks will be important to you but this isn’t all the design. We try to work to incorporate fun things about you into the design. For instance, we had a couple who loved to sit at bars so we built a three-sided bar with seats so the guests could sit at the bar during the reception. We also had a singer/songwriter couple gave away her friend’s albums as favors for her guests.

The design is about encompassing a feel. Formal with a great dance party, fun and cocktaily, full of good music. Whatever your vibe is, we use the creative session to dive deeper into that. Think of ways you can make the wedding really you and you will steer away from cookie cutter and won’t have to worry about copying the same look as your friends from Pinterest. When all of this makes your head want to explode, we step in and help narrow down the design and throw out fun ideas then make them happen!
